BBC teams up with citizen journalists’ network Global Voices
Over the next two weeks, the BBC will work closely with non-profit blogging network Global Voices Online.
BBC news will engage with blogging posts from the network, while Global Voices’s managing editor, Solana Larsen, will get involved in news production in the BBC’s newsroom.
“The idea that citizen journalism is somehow opposed to, or in conflict with, traditional journalism is now clearly past. It’s evident that both exist in a symbiotic relationship with one another, with many opportunities to collaborate on the creation of news, storytelling and distribution of content,” said Global Voices’s executive director, Ivan Sigal, about the project.
Steve Herrmann, editor of the BBC news website, agreed. On the BBC’s editors’ blog, he welcomed the collaboration. He wrote: “Global Voices, which specialises in giving individuals the tools and support to comment and report on the issues that matter to them, could add an interesting extra dimension to some of our news coverage.”
Global Voices is a community of more than 200 bloggers which aims to bring translation and reports from the developing countries. It was founded in 2005 at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. Before its partnership with the BBC, it had already collaborated with news groups Reuters and CNN.
BBC news decided on a collaboration with Global Voices as part of the BBC’s SuperPower feature exploring the special power of the internet, presented by Aleks Krotoski.
To take more advantage of that special power, the director of BBC global news, Peter Horrocks, urged BBC news journalists in a recent speech to take social media as an additional source of news more seriously.

Raids ‘kill Indonesia militants’

Indonesian police remove the body of a man they shot dead
Indonesian security forces say they have killed three suspected militants in two raids near the capital Jakarta.
The raids were said to be linked to an ongoing operation against militants in Aceh province that has brought a number of arrests.
Police said they could neither confirm nor deny the man killed in the first raid was Dulmatin, a top member of the Jemaah Islamiah (JI) group.
He is wanted over the Bali bomb attacks in 2002 that killed 202 people.
‘Big name’
The first raid took place at an internet cafe in Pamulang city, west of the capital, local media reported.
The cafe owner told Associated Press that the suspected militant had been logged on to the internet for about five minutes when officers stormed in. Police said the suspect fired one shot from a revolver before he was killed.
In the second operation, police said they had shot dead two suspected members of the same group and arrested two more.
Anti-terror police chief Tito Karnavian told media the dead man from the first raid was a “big name”.
A police spokesman, Edward Aritonang, later told the BBC it was not clear if the man was Dulmatin and that further tests were taking place.
He said: “We believe that the man… supplied weapons and funding to the Aceh militant group.”
Indonesia’s Metro TV station showed footage of what it said was the dead man.
DNA tests
Dulmatin has been one of the most-wanted Indonesian militant figures. The US has offered a $10m reward for information leading to his death or arrest.
He is believed to have set off one of the two bombs in Bali on 12 October 2002. A total of 202 people died in the attacks, many of them foreign tourists.
Dulmatin had been thought to be hiding in the Philippines.
Security ministry anti-terrorism chief Ansyaad Mbai told Agence France-Presse: “If it’s true that it’s him, we will be very grateful that the most-wanted terrorist has been killed. It will be a big relief to us.”
DNA tests might be needed to confirm whether Dulmatin was the man killed.
Such tests were needed to prove beyond doubt that Noordin Mohamed Top, at the time Indonesia’s most-wanted Islamist militant, had been killed in September 2009.
Police thought they had killed him in a previous raid only for forensic tests to prove them wrong.
Dulmatin was also rumoured to have been killed previously – tests were carried out on a body found in the southern Philippines in 2008, but it was confirmed to not be his.
The latest raids come less than two weeks before the visit to Indonesia of US President Barack Obama.
Indonesia has made significant inroads in recent years into dismantling the leadership of Jemaah Islamiah.
The police have also been recently engaged in an operation targeting Aceh militants.
A total of 14 people have been charged with plotting to launch terrorist attacks.
Those charged are believed by officials to be members of a previously unknown terror group.
But seizures in raids included DVDs on the Bali bombings.
Police have been investigating possible links between the militants and Jemaah Islamiyah, which was blamed by the authorities for the Bali attacks.

Jeff Bridges hits right note to land Oscar gold – Hindustan Times
Nearly 40 years after his first nomination, Jeff Bridges finally struck a chord with Oscars voters for his portrayal of a washed up country singer in the drama Crazy Heart.
The 60-year-old veteran is one of Hollywood’s most recognizable and consistently bankable actors, part of an acting dynasty that includes his parents Dorothy and Lloyd as well as brother Beau.
For Crazy Heart, Bridges once again demonstrated his skill as a musician to play the alcoholic Bad Blake, a man struggling against his inner demons as he battles to recapture his glory days.
Bridges, who memorably played a pianist reaching for the big time in 1989 in The Fabulous Baker Boys, initially passed on the script for Crazy Heart after discovering that there was no music attached to it.
But the involvement of musician T-Bone Burnett re-ignited his interest in the project and he quickly signed on for the role. Several of Burnett’s songs performed by Bridges were written with the actor in mind.
Burnett also helped Bridges flesh out his character by schooling him in the sort of music Bad would have listened to during his formative years. “He did a really wonderful thing,” Bridges said in a recent interview. “He gave me a breakdown of the music Bad would have listened to growing up in Fort Worth, Texas, where T-Bone grew up.
“It would have been Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen — not just this narrow [country music] thing. So Dylan was a role model for me: I watched some of his performances. And certainly (Kris) Kristofferson,” Bridges adds.
Bridges’s Oscar triumph is the crowning glory of a lifelong career in showbusiness, which took off in earnest with his performance in Peter Bogdanovich’s masterful 1971 film, The Last Picture Show.
That role earned Bridges the first of his five Oscar nods, the second coming three years later for his part opposite Clint Eastwood in Michael Cimino’s 1974 classic Thunderbolt and Lightfoot.
Since then Bridges has appeared in around 50 films, playing everything from an aging slacker in Joel and Ethan Coen’s cult 1998 film “The Big Lebowski” to a plane crash survivor in Fearless and a killer in the 1993 The Vanishing.
Bridges’s other two Academy Award nominations came for his performances in the 1984 science-fiction fantasy Starman, where he played an alien visiting earth and the 2000 political thriller The Contender where he played the president of the United States.
In recent years, Bridges has appeared in a slew of successful films, including the Oscar-nominated Seabiscuit and 2008’s superhero hit Iron Man. He will next be seen in Disney’s Tron Legacy, a sequel to the 1982 film in which he also starred.
Bridges is also planning to reunite with the Coen brothers for a remake of the western True Grit, where he will play Rooster Cogburn, the role made famous by John Wayne in the 1969 original.
