BBC tests new homepage

March 14, 2010 · Posted in content · Comment

The BBC gave its web users a chance to try its new homepage today. It will stay as a public beta for a while to get feedback, and test some more features “ and can be accessed by a link in the top of the old homepage or here.

Apart from removing its top-of-page clock to make room for central navigation above the top stories, the new design puts more emphasis on a visual multi-media approach and allows for further personalisation.

To showcase more top stories, the new homepage displays them in a automatically changing carousel. A new horizontal navigation bar above them offers news, sport, weather, iPlayer, TV, radio and a “More”-button for all other requests.

Otherwise the structure of the homepage stays basically the same, but with more emphasis on pictures and videos. BBC iPlayer highlights can now be browsed from within the homepage, and it will introduce a new Media Zone to showcase its range of content, which will be unveiled when a user navigates the mouse over the thumbnails.

You can also follow your interests through a new Topic Tracker section. But you’ll need to put in your settings afresh if you personalised the old site, because the back end has changed.

The new design was developed in a collaboration with the graphic designer Neville Brody, whose Research Studios has worked closely with the BBC in the past couple of months; we had a first glimpse of the results a few weeks ago.

BBC sources have told MediaGuardian that the new-look site is supposed to fully launch by the end of March, but there might be some delays: this is a big project. The BBC has currently about 400 top-level domains, although it’s meant to drop half of these by 2012, with its £135m budget due to come down a quarter by 2013.

EU ‘nearing’ Greece bail-out deal

March 13, 2010 · Posted in content · Comment

The EU is poised to reach agreement on a potential multi-billion euro bail-out for Greece after weeks of crisis, senior officials have told the BBC.

They say the rescue package would be available if Greece asked for assistance to finance its huge deficit.

Eurozone ministers are expected to finalise a proposal setting out a range of options as early as Monday.

Greece has not requested help so far. The EU says no deal has been agreed but technical work is continuing.

Greece is struggling to deal with a 300bn euro ($419bn; £259bn) debt. It needs to raise about 20bn euros ($27bn) on bond markets to refinance debt maturing in April and May.

Its deficit is more than four times higher than eurozone rules allow. Austerity measures aimed at reducing it have provoked public anger. The crisis has also undermined the euro.

The BBC’s Gavin Hewitt in Brussels says the hope is that the proposed deal will be there as a last resort, and the funding will not actually be needed.

Germany and France would be the main backers, with no contribution from Britain and other non-euro countries, our correspondent adds.

European media reports say options being considered include the provision of loans to Greece and a bond issue guaranteed by eurozone countries.

Officials are quoted as saying that the aid could amount to 25bn euros.

‘Speculation’

Any potential rescue package will be hugely controversial in Germany where there is strong opposition to helping Greece, our correspondent adds.

It would also have to avoid the possibility of a challenge from country’s supreme court.

The German finance ministry denied the reports on Saturday. Reuters news agency quoted a ministry spokesman as saying: “We are not aware that this is being planned.”

European Commission spokesman Jonathan Todd said: “The commission stands ready to act if necessary. Technical work is ongoing and has not yet been concluded. All the rest is speculation.”

Alongside the relief package, the commission is working on tougher rules to monitor fiscal discipline among eurozone countries, said Olli Rehn, the commissioner for economic and monetary affairs.

“The Greek case is a potential turning point for the eurozone,” he told the Guardian newspaper, adding that failure would “do serious and maybe permanent damage to the credibility of the European Union”.

The deal would have to be constructed to get around rules governing the euro currency which prohibit a bail-out for a country on the brink of insolvency.

Greece’s austerity measures have sparked protests and nationwide strikes.

European Union rules state that no nation in the euro bloc should have an annual budget deficit which is higher than 3% of its gross domestic product.

Greece has pledged to reduce its deficit from 12.7% to 8.7% during 2010. Its long-term plan aims to cut the budget shortfall drastically, to less than 3% by 2012.

Behind director’s Hurt Locker – Vancouver Sun

March 13, 2010 · Posted in content · Comment

Bigelow was already upset by the time I talked to her about Blue Steel because of an earlier confrontation with a group of student journalists who had bluntly asked her what she, a woman, thought she was doing making a gory movie like this?

Bigelow has always hated having her gender dragged into the violence debate. Back in 1990, she cited one of her favourite directors, the ultra-macho Walter Hill, who made 48 Hours.

“I mean, if I was sitting here and I was Walter Hill instead of Kathryn Bigelow, people wouldn’t be asking me about the violence,” she objected.

“What I’m picking up from these questions is that violence is a male domain and I don’t agree. . . . I make movies about things that interest me. I’m not trying to beat men at their game. I’m not trying to be the only woman who can make an action movie or whatever.”

It was a revealing conversation. Bigelow was guarded but cordial. And then, suddenly, she revealed her short fuse.

A publicist for the film entered the room to retrieve a file, and Bigelow abruptly rose to her full six feet and towered over the poor woman. “You’re bothering us!” she snapped. “Get out!” Once the offending publicist had fled, Bigelow settled back in her chair to admit to a fascination with violence in all her movies, from her audacious biker movie, The Loveless, which involves a child who commits suicide after killing the father who’s been raping her, to her vampire western, Near Dark.

She was genuinely enthusiastic about the lengths she went to with her first film, a short subject called The Set-Up.

“I was making this movie about two guys beating each other up, and I couldn’t afford stunt coordinators, so I asked these two guys to beat each other up for take after take after take.

“We were shooting all night, and at first, they thought it was cool, but by dawn the next morning, when they were both bloody and bruised, they didn’t think it was as much fun.”

And yes, she loves seductive imagery. “I think you kind of need to massage your viewer before you punch him.”

By her standards, Bigelow is a filmmaker of integrity who doesn’t compromise her artistic principles.

The Hurt Locker, a brilliantly executed treatise on the macho bomb-disposal culture, is a case in point.

“War’s dirty little secret is that some men love it,” she said in explaining why she wanted to make The Hurt Locker. An Oscar may have brought her respectability, but the lady remains true to her nature.
